Save Money on LIRR or Metro North with CityTicket

Recently, I realized a lot of people did not know they could save money when riding the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) or Metro North by buying a CityTicket. When I told them I pay just $4 one-way between Penn Station and many popular stops, such as Flushing or Jamaica for JFK International Airport, they were often surprised. A normal off peak ticket from Penn Station to Jamaica, for example, costs $7 so a CityTicket can result in quite a big discount.     LIRR or Metro North CityTicket Only available on Saturdays and Sundays, and it has to be used the day it was purchased Allows travel between Brooklyn or Manhattan and Queens on MTA Long Island Rail Road Allows travel between Manhattan and the Bronx on MTA Metro North Railroad   To buy them at the ticket kiosk, simply hit the CityTicket button rather than the one-way or round-trip buttons. Instead of paying the normal rates, you’ll pay just $4. For a list of the eligible CityTicket stations,...

Free $50 Car Service Via Uber

I’ve previously mentioned how you can get free $45 of car service via Uber. Well, now the deal is better than ever, because you can get free $50 of car service from the current Uber promotion and possibly 20% off your next Uber ride. Free car service should help save you money when you are trying to get to the airport for your honeymoon.   Uber Promotion Normally, you get $10 of Uber credit as a new customer but until January 20, 2014, you will get $20 of credit for signing up with Uber via the new year Uber promotion. As I mentioned previously when discussing Uber, you can also apply a promotion code to add on more free Uber credits, but you must do that AFTER signing up. Wanting.com has a great compilation of all Uber promotion codes ever offered and one of the recent codes is UBERFAST81, which gives you $30 off your first ride.   [Update 1/21/13] The $20 Uber signup bonus promotion now goes until...

Bachelor/Bachelorette Party Cost: Atlantic Limousine

One of the timeless bachelor/bachelorette party ideas is hitting up the casino to have a nice meal and do some social gambling with your best friends. Movies, such as The Hangover, often use Las Vegas as a setting but for those of us in New York City, Atlantic City is much closer and can still be a fun time. It only takes around two hours to drive from Manhattan to Atlantic City with no traffic so on average it takes two to three hours. Trust me when I say this – it’s a lot more fun to take a limousine or party bus over than the Greyhound or Chinatown bus. And when you have a group, the cost is actually not that high for a limousine. I did some extensive research for one of my friend’s 30th birthday party a couples month ago and discovered Atlantic Limousine. In my opinion, Atlantic Limousine has the best prices for limousines from New York City to Atlantic City. In addition, their website...

Wedding Transportation Cost: Regal Carriage

Instead of booking a limousine, my fiancée and I are going with a car service from Regal Carriage to shuttle us around on our wedding day. Limos can be very pricey costing hundreds of dollars for a short ride and while it’s cool to ride in a stretch limo, I’ve done it before, and it’s really nothing too special. We thought it was more important to save money on aspects, such as transportation and wedding cake, so that we can invite more guests while sticking to our budget. As a result, we though the SUVs from Regal Carriage were perfect for our needs.   Wedding Transportation: Regal Carriage Date Price Quoted: May 2013 Wedding Date Quoted For: July 2013 (Saturday evening) Price Assumptions: One vehicle, one way Capacity: 6-passenger SUV Transportation Fee: $67.50 Tax: $7.55 Gratuity: 20% Total Wedding Transportation Cost: $90.05   The Main Point If you look at Regal Carriage’s rates, you’ll see that SUV rides within Manhattan are $75. If you mention their website when you make a reservation, however, you...

Free $45 Car Service Via Uber

If you’re not familiar with Uber, it’s a tech company that provides on-demand car service in major metropolitan areas, such as New York, San Francisco, etc. Instead of calling up a car service, you ask for a car from your smartphone or computer by inputting your current address (or Uber will detect your address if you have location sharing on). Drivers that have contracted with Uber will then see the request and accept. Once confirmed, they will come pick you up. Then at your destination, you simply get out of the car. Your credit card is already on file and it will be charged along with tip, which is already factored into the price. Rates vary by cities and vehicle type, and you can see them here. Last but not least, a summary of the trip will be emailed to you.     I would say Uber is a up-and-coming tech company except they’re beyond that phase now and have already grown so rapidly. Nevertheless, they are constantly offering...

Wedding Transportation Cost: Bermuda Limousine #2

In the last post, I discussed the cost of a 24-passenger shuttle bus from Bermuda Limousine. In all likelihood, if you are moving from one location to another, such as from the wedding ceremony to the reception, you will need a bigger bus and maybe even multiple buses. Here is the cost breakdown for Bermuda Limousine’s bigger options:   Wedding Transportation: Bermuda Limousine Date Price Quoted: May 2013 Wedding Date Quoted For: July 2013 (Saturday evening) Price Assumptions: One vehicle, one way Capacity: 40-passenger coach Transportation Fee: $629.97 Tax: 0% Gratuity: 0% Total Wedding Transportation Cost: $629.97   Wedding Transportation: Bermuda Limousine Date Price Quoted: May 2013 Wedding Date Quoted For: July 2013 (Saturday evening) Price Assumptions: One vehicle, one way Capacity: 56-passenger coach Transportation Fee: $645.15 Tax: 0% Gratuity: 0% Total Wedding Transportation Cost: $645.15   The Main Point At the above prices of $629.97 for a 40-passenger bus and $645.15 for a 56-passenger bus, it comes out to $15.75 and $11.52 a person respectively. Those prices are...

Wedding Transportation Cost: Bermuda Limousine

While my fiancée and I were not that interested in getting a limo for our wedding transportation needs, we did need to find passenger buses to shuttle some of our guests from one part of New York City to another. Given the plethora of transportation services available in NYC, you would think that plenty of choices exist for passenger buses, but it’s actually quite hard to locate a company that provides coach services without requiring a minimum number of hours or distance traveled. Luckily, I was able to get in touch with Bermuda Limousine, which got good reviews on the Internet.   Wedding Transportation: Bermuda Limousine Date Price Quoted: May 2013 Wedding Date Quoted For: July 2013 (Saturday evening) Price Assumptions: One vehicle, one way Capacity: 24-passenger coach Transportation Fee: $493.35 Tax: 0% Gratuity: 0% Total Wedding Transportation Cost: $493.35   The Main Point Unfortunately, the price is way too high to be feasible even if it does include tax and gratuity already. With a capacity of only 24...
