Moving Company Cost: College Educated Movers

Summer is peak moving season and when a couple of friends recently asked me about moving company prices, I realized I never shared the price information for College Educated Movers. As the name implies, it’s a moving company operated by guys who have college degrees! Whether college degrees make a difference or not, College Educated Movers receives great reviews on Yelp.   Moving Company: College Educated Movers Date Price Quoted: August 2013 Moving Date Quoted For: August 2013 (Friday afternoon) Number of Movers: 2 Guys Rate Type: Flat Rate Flat Rate Fee: $515 Restrictions: N/A Truck Or Van: Both Insurance: No Tax: 0% Gratuity: 15% (Not mandatory but basically required by social etiquette) Total Moving Company Cost: $592.25   The Main Point Like RVS Moving Service, College Educated Movers charges a flat rate, but the rate for College Educated Movers is lower coming in at just under $600 after gratuity. In addition, College Educated Movers offers both a truck or a van. In comparison to hourly rate moving companies, however, College Educated Movers isn’t that low-cost. They are more than...

Moving Company Cost: RVS Moving & Delivery Service

Many of the previous moving companies I’ve analyzed so far, such as Lightning Van Moving and Get There Moving, charge an hourly rate. That’s great for some people, my wife and I included, who don’t have a lot of stuff, because we moved right after getting married. For those that are moving after being married for a year or so, however, you’ll probably find that you have accumulated a lot of items in that first year or two. As a result, a flat rate moving company might be a better choice, and RVS Moving & Delivery Service only does flat rate moves.   Moving Company: RVS Moving & Delivery Service Date Price Quoted: August 2013 Moving Date Quoted For: August 2013 (Friday afternoon) Number of Movers: 2 Guys Rate Type: Flat Rate Flat Rate Fee: $700 Restrictions: N/A Truck Or Van: Truck Insurance: No Tax: 0% Gratuity: 15% (Not mandatory but basically required by social etiquette) Total Moving Company Cost: $805.00   The Main Point RVS Moving and Delivery Service receives great reviews all over the Internet, and...

Moving Company Cost: Lightning Van Moving

If you don’t have a lot of stuff to move and are looking for one of the highest-rated but lowest cost moving companies in New York City, Lightning Van Moving just might be the perfect fit. Unlike Get There Moving or Shea Moving, Lightning Van Moving utilizes a large van instead of a truck. Even with just a van, however, they can move quite a bit of stuff in two trips and do it all quickly.   Moving Company: Lightning Van Moving Date Price Quoted: August 2013 Moving Date Quoted For: August 2013 (Friday afternoon) Number of Movers: 2 Guys Rate Type: Hourly Hourly Fee: $80 Restrictions: Minimum 3 Hours Truck Or Van: Van Insurance: No Tax: 0% Gratuity: 15% (Not mandatory but basically required by social etiquette) Total Moving Company Cost: $276.00   The Main Point $276.00 is super cheap, but this price quote is for two guys and three hours, the minimum time required. If you don’t have a lot of items to move, you could even ask for just one guy for three hours. That...

Moving Company Cost: Get There Moving

Get There Moving already gets high marks on Yelp as a moving company but what really sets them apart in my mind was just one factor – they consistently answered the phone when I called. As I mentioned before, much like wedding vendors, moving companies suffer from a lack of price transparency. Out of the six or so moving companies I called, only Get There Moving picked up my call and was able to quote me an estimate on the phone right away. Some other moving companies had me fill out an online form and still failed to respond to me in a timely manner. Sure, a couple moving companies also responded quickly to my email inquiry or called me back when I left a voice mail but when I’m trying to comparison shop for the best deal, having to wait even a few hours is not ideal. A simple action, such as picking up the phone right away actually reveals a lot. It’s a statement that you have...

Moving Company Cost: Jugglebox

We are finally done moving . . . and cleaning . . . and unpacking . . . and reorganizing. And while I absolutely loathe moving and all that goes with it, I will say that using Jugglebox to help us pack and unpack made life much easier. At first, I thought spending ~$100 for packing was crazy but after calculating how much cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, and tape would cost, I decided to give Jugglebox a try.     Moving Company: Jugglebox Date Price Quoted: August 2013 Moving Date Quoted For: August 2013 (Friday afternoon) Number of Movers: N/A Rate Type: Flat rate Flat Rate Fee: $99 Restrictions: 2 weeks rental Truck Or Van: N/A Insurance: N/A Tax: 8.875% Gratuity: 0% Total Moving Company Cost: $107.79   The Main Point Jugglebox is not actually a moving company in the traditional sense so sorry for any confusion. What they are is one of the original companies that rent out moving bins for a fee. Moving bins stack well, are easy to...

Moving Company Cost: Shea Moving

Now that we’re married, my wife and I are in the process of moving apartments and in NYC, moving is an extreme hassle. The traffic and parking are horrible, which means you don’t have very much time to move your stuff into and out of a vehicle. Some buildings are walkups, which means no elevators. On top of that, you have to worry about issues, such as bedbugs, which is a big concern in NYC. Then there’s the moving company aspect . . . I’m not sure when the reputations of moving companies became worse than that of used-car salesmen but sadly, that can be a pretty accurate opinion these days. It may have something to do with all the shady movers who advertised on Craigslist then tacked on surprise hidden fees and damaged people’s furniture without any compensation. Nevertheless, many great moving companies exist, and I went sleuthing on Yelp to find them. While a lot of them have great reviews, they are still inflicted with the same...
