Moving Company Cost: College Educated Movers

Summer is peak moving season and when a couple of friends recently asked me about moving company prices, I realized I never shared the price information for College Educated Movers. As the name implies, it’s a moving company operated by guys who have college degrees! Whether college degrees make a difference or not, College Educated Movers receives great reviews on Yelp.   Moving Company: College Educated Movers Date Price Quoted: August 2013 Moving Date Quoted For: August 2013 (Friday afternoon) Number of Movers: 2 Guys Rate Type: Flat Rate Flat Rate Fee: $515 Restrictions: N/A Truck Or Van: Both Insurance: No Tax: 0% Gratuity: 15% (Not mandatory but basically required by social etiquette) Total Moving Company Cost: $592.25   The Main Point Like RVS Moving Service, College Educated Movers charges a flat rate, but the rate for College Educated Movers is lower coming in at just under $600 after gratuity. In addition, College Educated Movers offers both a truck or a van. In comparison to hourly rate moving companies, however, College Educated Movers isn’t that low-cost. They are more than...

Moving Company Cost: Lightning Van Moving

If you don’t have a lot of stuff to move and are looking for one of the highest-rated but lowest cost moving companies in New York City, Lightning Van Moving just might be the perfect fit. Unlike Get There Moving or Shea Moving, Lightning Van Moving utilizes a large van instead of a truck. Even with just a van, however, they can move quite a bit of stuff in two trips and do it all quickly.   Moving Company: Lightning Van Moving Date Price Quoted: August 2013 Moving Date Quoted For: August 2013 (Friday afternoon) Number of Movers: 2 Guys Rate Type: Hourly Hourly Fee: $80 Restrictions: Minimum 3 Hours Truck Or Van: Van Insurance: No Tax: 0% Gratuity: 15% (Not mandatory but basically required by social etiquette) Total Moving Company Cost: $276.00   The Main Point $276.00 is super cheap, but this price quote is for two guys and three hours, the minimum time required. If you don’t have a lot of items to move, you could even ask for just one guy for three hours. That...

Moving Company Cost: Get There Moving

Get There Moving already gets high marks on Yelp as a moving company but what really sets them apart in my mind was just one factor – they consistently answered the phone when I called. As I mentioned before, much like wedding vendors, moving companies suffer from a lack of price transparency. Out of the six or so moving companies I called, only Get There Moving picked up my call and was able to quote me an estimate on the phone right away. Some other moving companies had me fill out an online form and still failed to respond to me in a timely manner. Sure, a couple moving companies also responded quickly to my email inquiry or called me back when I left a voice mail but when I’m trying to comparison shop for the best deal, having to wait even a few hours is not ideal. A simple action, such as picking up the phone right away actually reveals a lot. It’s a statement that you have...

Wedding Hair and Makeup Cost: Michiko Boorberg

While Michiko Boorberg is not as widely reviewed as some of the other Asian hair and makeup artists, such as Sachiko Hair and Makeup or Sissi Chan, she is still a popular artist that receives a lot of positive reviews. Have a look at the price of her services.   Wedding Hair and Makeup Artist: Michiko Boorberg Date Price Quoted: April 2013 Wedding Date Quoted For: September 2013 (Saturday) Price Assumptions: Includes airbrush application for bride and 4 bridesmaids Assistant: No Airbrush Application: Yes Estimated Preparation Time: Not specified but listed as a half day package Package Fee: $1,300 Trial Fee: $200 Engagement Shoot Fee: $200 (estimated) Travel Fee: $0 Tax: 0% Gratuity: 0% Total Wedding Hair and Makeup Cost: $1,700   The Main Point Michiko Boorberg offers both half day packages as well as full day packages. Both half day and full day packages are designed for the bride and 3 bridesmaids. You can, however, add an additional person for $200 for both hair AND makeup or $125 for just hair OR...

Wedding Band Cost: Baby Soda Jazz Band

In addition to The Prenups, another niche band represented by Lucy Music is Baby Soda Jazz Band. Baby Soda Jazz Band is a 6-piece band that specializes in street jazz. According to them, their influence ranges from 30s era swing to New Orleans jazz and southern gospel. Very cool stuff.   Wedding Band: Baby Soda Jazz Band Date Price Quoted: February 2013 Wedding Date Quoted For: N/A Price Assumptions: 4 to 6 hours for ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception Band Fee: $5,900 Travel Fee: $0 (non-specified additional fee for outside the NYC area) Tax: 0% Gratuity: 0% Total Wedding Band Cost: $5,900   The Main Point Baby Soda Jazz Band is also $5,900 but more along the lines of The Engagements Cover Band and The Affections, they do play for all the parts of your wedding, and one can definitely imagine southern gospel music playing during the ceremony while swing-like jazz pumps up the crowd during the reception. I like that they have a ton of videos on the...

Wedding Band Cost: The Prenups

Besides two of their most popular bands, The Engagements Cover Band and The Affections, Lucy Music also represents a few niche bands that specializes in rock, jazz, and string instruments. The Prenups is a 5-piece guitar-driven rock band that excels in 60s and 70s soul and rock. If you are going for a loud and vibrant wedding, here is the cost breakdown:   Wedding Band: The Prenups Date Price Quoted: February 2013 Wedding Date Quoted For: N/A Price Assumptions: 4 hours for reception Band Fee: $5,900 Travel Fee: $0 (non-specified additional fee for outside the NYC area) Tax: 0% Gratuity: 0% Total Wedding Band Cost: $5,900   The Main Point At $5,900, The Prenups are priced in the middle range of bands represented by Lucy Music. Do note, however, that the band only plays 4 hours for the dinner reception. They do not play music for the ceremony or the cocktail hour. Known as an anti-wedding wedding band, I’m not sure you would want crowd-stirring rock music during your...

Wedding Band Cost: The Affections

If you really like The Engagements Cover Band, which I analyzed in the last post, but they are already booked for your wedding date or you are looking for a band that is slightly less expensive, have a look at The Affections. They are a part of Lucy Music, the music company that manages The Engagements. Anyways, here is the cost breakdown:   Wedding Band: The Affections Date Price Quoted: February 2013 Wedding Date Quoted For: N/A Price Assumptions: 4 to 6 hours for ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception Band Fee: $7,900 Travel Fee: $0 (non-specified additional fee for outside the NYC area) Tax: 0% Gratuity: 0% Total Wedding Band Cost: $7,9,00   The Main Point The Affections are a spin-off band of The Engagements. In fact, I was told all of them have performed with The Engagements at one point or another. Their music list has similarities but from a quick glance, I would say The Affections seem to play less soul and Motown. Nevertheless, this could be...

Wedding Band Cost: The Engagements Cover Band

Music is a big part of the total wedding cost, but it is a cost area that people are often confused about. The Engagements Cover Band is one of the premier wedding bands in New York City and specializes in 80’s cover music. They receive perfect reviews on Wedding Wire so if music is an important part of your wedding, here is the cost breakdown for The Engagements:   Wedding Band: The Engagements Cover Band Date Price Quoted: February 2013 Wedding Date Quoted For: N/A Price Assumptions: 4 to 6 hours for ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception Band Fee: $9,000 Travel Fee: $0 (non-specified additional fee for outside the NYC area) Tax: 0% Gratuity: 0% Total Wedding Band Cost: $9,000   The Main Point As mentioned, people are often surprised by some of the prices that wedding bands charge. I find that a good way to think about the price of the band at your wedding is in terms of entertainment cost per guest. If you had a 150...

Wedding Venue Cost: The Palm House at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden #3

In previous posts, I’ve estimated what a wedding at the Palm House might cost on a Saturday during the off-season and during Saturday afternoons. Here is what the cost breakdown looks like for The Palm House on a Saturday evening during the peak season:     Wedding Venue: The Palm House at The Brooklyn Botanic Garden Date Price Quoted: November 2012 Wedding Date Quoted For: Peak season Saturday evenings Price Assumptions: Includes ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception for 150 guests. Room Name: N/A Capacity: ~250 Venue Fee: $5,085 Catering Per Person (Low Range): $205 Catering Per Person (High Range): $215 Tax: 8.875% Gratuity: 20% Total Wedding Venue Cost: $46,691   The Main Point Naturally, Saturday evening weddings during the peak season are going to cost the most. If you have your heart set and are willing to pay up, these prices are what you should have in mind. Personally, I think Saturday afternoon weddings at The Palm House offer a much better value if you are price-conscious. No matter...

Wedding Venue Cost: The Palm House at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden #2

Compared to the prices quoted on my previous post about wedding venue cost for The Palm House at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, prices for Saturday afternoons are significantly cheaper. Here is what the cost breakdown looks like:     Wedding Venue: The Palm House at The Brooklyn Botanic Garden Date Price Quoted: November 2012 Wedding Date Quoted For: Peak season Saturday afternoons Price Assumptions: Includes ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception for 150 guests Room Name: N/A Capacity: ~250 Venue Fee: $3,210 Catering Per Person (Low Range): $150 Catering Per Person (High Range): $160 Tax: 8.875% Gratuity: 20% Total Wedding Venue Cost: $33,871   The Main Point While the venue fee is not much less, the catering cost drops quite a bit, and the savings can really add up as your wedding size increases. After all, the Palm House has capacity for around 200 people. One negative aspect of having a daytime wedding at the Palm House, however, is that the Brooklyn Botanic Garden will be open to the public...
