Are You Maximizing Your Savings When Shopping on Amazon?

Amazon is one of the most popular places for wedding couples to list their registry and for wedding guests to buy registry gifts. And if you took part in the recent Amex Sync Amazon deal where you were able to buy $75 Amazon gift cards for just $50, then you’re already saving a lot of money on your wedding registry purchases. But are you maximizing your savings when shopping on Amazon by looking at all the buying options for a particular product?

Shopping on Amazon

Some shoppers may not be aware, but Amazon doesn’t just sell products from Amazon. Over the years, Amazon has allowed re-sellers to ┬álist their products, and some even have Amazon storefronts. In a way, Amazon has become like Ebay minus the auctioning aspect. In fact, Amazon has easily overtaken Ebay as the world’s largest online retailer.

What this means is that when you search for a particular product, many sellers with different prices will exist, but you will have one seller picked for you by default. This seller is often Amazon themselves, but the price may not be the lowest price option. As a result, you will need to look at all the buying options when shopping on Amazon to find the best deal.

Zojirushi CV-DSC40 Example

I’ll show you an example involving the Zojirushi CV-DSC40 hybrid water boiler, which would make a fantastic wedding gift and is the #1 bestselling water boiler on Amazon. By default, the Zojirushi CV-DSC40 sells for $174.40 directly from Amazon; you know this, because it says “ships from and sold by Amazon.com” just below where the price is listed. If you look at “more buying choices” all the way on the right hand side, however, you’ll see plenty of re-sellers.

Once you click on more buying choices and sort by price + shipping, you’ll see that Amazon does not offer the best price for this product. One seller offers the Zojirushi CV-DSC40 for just $170.99 while another seller offers the water boiler at a price of $173.00. Both are also brand new and priced better than Amazon’s price of $174.40. Comparing $170.99 to $174.40, you may think you’re only saving $3.41, but you’re actually saving a lot more.

If you look and click on the "more buying choices" section, however, you'll see that lower-cost options exist for the same exact product!

If you add the Zojirushi CV-DSC40 to your cart, you’ll see that the product bought directly from Amazon incurs sales tax so your final price is actually $189.88. In addition, you get free 5-8 business days shipping so the estimated delivery date is between December 27, 2013 and January 2, 2014.

If you bought the Zojirushi CV-DSC40 from another seller, however, no sales tax is added (although you may owe sales tax when you file your yearly income taxes) so your final price is just $170.99. In addition, the shipping speed is just 3-5 business days, which means an estimated shipping date between December 23, 2013 and December 24, 2013. In the end, you’re actually saving $18.89 ($189.88 – $170.99) and receiving the item quicker.

The Main Point

Amazon may have great products at great prices, but the main takeaway from this post is that you can save even more when shopping on Amazon simply by looking at ALL the buying options. Prices on Amazon change all the time and when you are shopping for a product, the default seller that Amazon picks for you may or may not have the best price. By looking at all the buying options, you’re able to see prices from re-sellers as well as from Amazon directly. Sometimes, re-sellers can offer substantially lower prices as well as faster shipping. Furthermore, you can use Amazon gift cards on any products, whether it’s sold directly from Amazon or from a re-seller.

From my own experience, I find that buying from a re-seller does not diminish the level of customer service you get from Amazon if and when something goes wrong. When I’ve received a broken product from a re-seller, Amazon has always refunded me what I paid if the re-seller won’t refund the money. But do be aware that it’s certainly possible for Amazon to provide better customer service if you buy from them directly. Last but not least, if you sign up for an Amazon Prime trial, you can get free two-day shipping.
