Free Honeymoon Convertible Car Rental in Hawaii

Driving a convertible car rental in Hawaii is one of those must-dos that every visitor has on his list. And since I’ve never driven a convertible before, I really wanted to try one out on our honeymoon, especially since we were in Kauai where it’s super scenic and the weather is fantastic. Of course, everyone else visiting Hawaii also wants a convertible car rental, and increased demand drives prices up. By using a combination of Costco Travel and my Barclays Arrival credit card, however, I was able to rent a Chrysler 200 convertible for free!

Costco Travel

Most people don’t know that Costco has a travel subsidiary, but I’ve been using it for a while now, and it’s recently become more popular among savvy travelers. Just remember that you do need a Costco Membership number to book a car on the site. Costco Travel consistently has some of the best prices for car rentals. Take New York City, for example, where car rentals are easily $100+ a day. A search on Costco Travel for a weekend rental this Saturday, on the other hand, shows cars available in midtown for $73.23 all in!

I love that Costco Travel is not deceptive with their pricing and includes the taxes and fees in the price so you can comparison shop. Another bonus is that you don’t need to put down a credit card when you make your Costco Travel booking so you can cancel last minute if you want to for free. What I like to do when I need a car rental is book a rental on Costco Travel then shop around for a better price between now and the rental day. If I find a better price elsewhere, I simply cancel my Costco Travel booking, which can be easily done online.

For our honeymoon in Hawaii, I rented a convertible less than one month in advance and still got an awesome price of $271.48 for a week-long rental. Other sites were charging $350+, which is actually pretty standard for summertime, the peak season in Hawaii. I charged the $271.48 to my Barclays Arrival credit card and used some of its 44,000 bonus miles to redeem for the convertible car rental making it free!

Convertible Car Rental Options in Hawaii

The three convertibles that are usually offered in Hawaii are the Chrysler 200, the Ford Mustang, and the Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. I almost never see another type of convertible being offered. Unless you have a strong preference for one of those three convertibles, I recommend the Chrysler 200, because it has a bigger trunk than the other two cars; you can have the top down and still fit a couple of bags or luggage in the trunk. Also, I’ve heard the Chrysler 200 is more friendly for leisurely driving. The Ford Mustang supposedly sits low while the Eclipse Spyder only has two seats and is tiny.

The Main Point

After driving a convertible in Hawaii, I really do think it’s a cool experience to have the wind blowing in your face as you take in the incredible scenery. For future trips to Hawaii, I’d probably just get a regular car but if it’s your first time to Hawaii, I definitely think a convertible is worth the extra cost (assuming it’s not too much). Start by searching Costco Travel to find some of the best car rental prices. But no matter where you end up booking the car in the end, you can still use the Barclays Arrival credit card then redeem the bonus miles to get a free convertible car rental.
