Flight Review: Cathay Pacific First Class from New York to Hong Kong

After my wedding, my sister flew back to Hong Kong and for that part of the trip, I booked her a ticket on Cathay Pacific First Class. Like her Singapore Airlines Business Class ticket, the Cathay Pacific ticket was free since we redeemed airlines miles and points. We had to pay a tiny amount for tax and a small telephone booking fee, but we just put those charges on the Barclays Arrival credit card and redeemed its bonus miles.

How You Can Do It

Like Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific is a premier Asian airline that has some of the best airplane seats. Luckily, Cathay Pacific is part of the Oneworld alliance. As a result, you can use American Airlines AAdvantage miles to redeem for award tickets on Cathay Pacific. As the American Airlines award chart displays, a one way Cathay Pacific First Class ticket from New York to Hong Kong costs 67,500 AAdvantage miles; business class costs 55,000 AAdvantages miles while economy costs 35,000 AAdvantage miles.

As a result, your best bet is to collect AAdvantage miles or Starwood points then transfer the points over to AAdvantage to book the ticket. Many Citi and American Express credit cards offer large signup bonuses involving AAdvantage miles or Starwood points. Some of the best credit cards at the moment include the Citi AAdvantage and Citi AAdvantage Business credit card (both 50,000 AAdvantage miles after spending $3,000 within 3 months), the American Express Starwood credit card (25,000 Starwood points after spending $5,000 within 6 months), and the American Express Starwood Business credit card (25,000 Starwood points after spending $5,000 within 6 months).

The tax for Cathay Pacific flights from New York to Hong Kong is just $2.50 and while you will have to pay a telephone booking fee as well, that fee is only $25.00. That’s right – a world-class flight experience for your wedding or honeymoon will cost just 67,500 AAdvantage miles and $27.50. Don’t forget to use the Barclays Arrival credit card to pay for the tax and telephone booking fee then use some of its 44,000 bonus miles to redeem for the charges so that you end up paying nothing.

Cathay Pacific First Class

My sister flew flight CX841 from JFK-HKG (New York to Hong Kong). The flight is roughly 16 hours departing at 10:05am and arriving at 2:05pm.

The Main Point

Having flown Cathay Pacific First Class myself, the flight really is top-notch. And using the right combination of airline miles and points obtained from opening credit cards, you can book this exact ticket without paying any cash. Just remember to be financially responsible and pay off your credit card balances every month, cancel the credit cards before the annual fee hits, and use Amazon Payments to meet credit card minimum spending requirements rather than actually spend any money. Hopefully, that will help you plan the ultimate wedding and an unforgettable honeymoon while paying next to nothing.
