Flight Review: Singapore Airlines Business Class from Hong Kong to San Francisco
Recently, my sister flew from Hong Kong, where she currently lives, back to the U.S. for my wedding. She wanted to visit a friend in San Francisco, however, before coming to New York City for the wedding. Normally, this type of airplane ticket would be expensive but using airline miles and points, I was able to book the ticket for free and just pay a small amount for tax and fuel surcharge, which cost nothing since I put the charge on my Barclays Arrival credit card and redeemed its bonus miles. More importantly, I was able to fly her from Hong Kong to San Francisco on Singapore Airlines Business Class.
How You Can Do It
Singapore Airlines has some of the most sought-after airplane seats so it is very restrictive about releasing award seats unless you are part of their own frequent flyer program, KrisFlyer. As a result, your best bet is to collect American Express Membership Rewards points and Starwood points then transfer the points over to KrisFlyer to book the ticket. A one way Singapore Airlines Business Class ticket from Hong Kong to San Francisco costs 75,000 KrisFlyer miles.
That amount is not hard to obtain, because many American Express credit cards offer large signup bonuses involving Membership Rewards points and Starwood points. Some of the best credit cards at the moment include the American Express Business Gold Rewards credit card (50,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $5,000 within 3 months), the American Express Starwood credit card (25,000 Starwood points after spending $5,000 within 6 months), and the American Express Starwood Business credit card (25,000 Starwood points after spending $5,000 within 6 months).
As mentioned earlier, don’t forget to use the Barclays Arrival credit card to pay for the tax and fuel surcharge then use some of its 44,000 bonus miles to redeem for the charges so that you end up paying nothing.
Singapore Airlines Business Class
My sister flew flight SQ02 from HKG-SFO (Hong Kong to San Francisco) and even though it was a late evening flight, the lounge was still well stocked, and she had a very enjoyable flight.
The Main Point
Singapore Airlines is considered one of the premier airlines, and their business class experience may even be better than many airlines’ first class experience! As you can tell, however, you don’t have to empty your wallet to fly Singapore Airlines Business Class. Using the right combination of airline miles and points, which I received for free from opening credit cards, I was able to book the ticket without paying any cash. Just remember to be financially responsible and pay off your credit card balances every month, cancel the credit cards before the annual fee hits, and use Amazon Payments to meet credit card minimum spending requirements rather than actually spend any money. Hopefully, that will help you plan the ultimate wedding and an unforgettable honeymoon while paying next to nothing.
