After Amazon Payments died, it became harder to meet large minimum spend and earn large credit card signup bonuses. As a result, I’ve been focusing more on credit cards that have very low minimum spend requirements. One of them is the Barclays US Airways credit card, and the signup bonus has just increased from 40,000 miles to 50,000 miles!   Barclays US Airways 50,000 Miles Signup Bonus   50,000 miles signup bonus after first purchase (no spending requirement!) 5,000 miles discount on US Airways award tickets First checked bag free for you and up to four companions on US Airways flights Annual companion certificate lets you pay $99 plus...

Save Money on LIRR or Metro North with CityTicket

Posted by on Sep 1, 2014 in Barclays Arrival, Credit Cards, Transportation | 0 comments

Recently, I realized a lot of people did not know they could save money when riding the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) or Metro North by buying a CityTicket. When I told them I pay just $4 one-way between Penn Station and many popular stops, such as Flushing or Jamaica for JFK International Airport, they were often surprised. A normal off peak ticket from Penn Station to Jamaica, for example, costs $7 so a CityTicket can result in quite a big discount.     LIRR or Metro North CityTicket Only available on Saturdays and Sundays, and it has to be used the day it was purchased Allows travel between Brooklyn...

Destination Wedding Tips and Guide

Previously, I shared a tip on how to save a bit of money when doing a destination wedding in Hawaii. I’m sure, however, that cost is only one of the many factors that need to be considered when planning a destination wedding. As a result, I thought I’d share this infographic I came across, which provides good destination wedding tips courtesy of Marriott.  ...

Lower Time Warner Cable Bill Via Retention Department

Posted by on Jul 24, 2014 in Miscellaneous | 0 comments

After you get married, you’ll be faced with a lot of expensive utility bills, such as Internet access, cell phone, etc. Even if you just get Internet access and no cable TV from Time Warner Cable, for example, it can still cost you an arm and a leg. Fortunately, lowering your Time Warner Cable bill is very easy to do simply by calling their retention department and asking for a discount.   Lower Time Warner Cable Bill I’m using Time Warner Cable as an example, because that is the cable company we use, but calling the retention department to get your monthly bill lowered works for almost all cable...

Hotel Review: Conrad Tokyo King Suite Bay View

Posted by on Jun 16, 2014 in Amex Hilton HHonors, Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve, Credit Cards, Hilton, Hotel | 0 comments

After flying ANA First Class Square to Narita International Airport and taking the Narita Express to Tokyo, we headed to the Conrad Tokyo, where we were staying five nights. We booked the stay using Hilton HHonors points and because I was a Hilton HHonors diamond, the hotel upgraded us from a standard room to a King Suite Bay View room, which was a nice surprise!     How You Can Do It The Conrad Tokyo is a category 10 hotel on the Hilton HHonors award chart, so a standard room will cost 70,000 to 95,000 points per night depending on what time of the year you stay at the...

Trip Review: Narita Express and Tokaido Sanyo Shinkansen

Posted by on Jun 4, 2014 in Barclays Arrival, Credit Cards | 2 comments

Japan loves trains and it’s not surprising given that their trains are efficient, fast, and clean. After our ANA First Class Square flight landed, we took the Narita Express from Narita International Airport to Tokyo Station since we were staying nearby. When we left Tokyo for Hiroshima, we boarded the Tokaido Sanyo Shinkansen, better known as the bullet train.   How You Can Do It Normally, the Narita Express costs 3,020 JPY one-way between the airport and Tokyo Station; this price is for the Ordinary Car, which is what I recommend, because the Green Car (first class) is not worth the extra money for this short ride. If you...

Flight Review: ANA First Class Square from Chicago to Tokyo

After stopping over at Charlotte for my friend’s wedding, my wife and I continued on to Japan for a week-long vacation at Tokyo then Hiroshima and Miyajima. We flew ANA First Class Square going to Tokyo and flew United BusinessFirst coming back to New York City from Hiroshima. By using United Airline’s MileagePlus miles and booking a round-trip, we were able to get one free stopover and one free open jaw. The free stopover meant our flight down to Charlotte was free, and the free open jaw meant we could fly back home from Hiroshima even though we flew into Tokyo.   How You Can Do It We booked...

Trip Review: What to Do in Washington DC

Posted by on May 19, 2014 in Hotel, Hyatt | 0 comments

Besides enjoying the Park Hyatt Washington Park Executive Suite and the great food options in the city, we also took part in a lot of activities during our visit to Washington DC. Naturally, the city has lots of museums, and they are not necessarily all government related. If you visit during the National Cherry Blossom Festival, you will have a daily list of festivities to choose from as well. Here’s a short list of what to do in Washington DC.   What to Do in Washington DC Segway tours are a popular way to quickly see all the popular buildings and memorials spread through the National Mall area, and...
